With the installation of a 5-sided CAVE, a unique industrial and university project has been successfully completed. The aim of this cooperation project is to establish the Virtual Engineering Rhein-Neckar (KVE Rhein-Neckar) competence centre, which is used by industrial and teaching institutions alike.

Together with John Deere Werke Mannheim – a world market leader in the field of agricultural machinery technology – as a cooperation partner, the Competence Center Virtual Engineering Rhein-Neckar has been established at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.

The center bundles the innovative potential of simulation, visualization and virtual reality. In addition to the two main players, other companies and educational institutions can also benefit from the concentration of technical equipment and expertise that is unique in the region.

For the accommodation of the competence centre, an architecturally sophisticated building was created that is specially tailored to its use. The technical highlight of the building is the 5-sided CAVE installed by Imsys with 3x3x3 meters projection screens. Through the three-dimensional representation in all relevant viewing directions, viewers “experience” virtual reality once again in a completely new way.

The entire projection takes place at the rear. In order to realize the CAVE in this way, a base plate of acrylic glass of approx. 3.2 x 3.2 meters and a thickness of almost 10 cm was used. According to the manufacturer, it is the largest, walkable and cantilevered acrylic glass panel ever used for this purpose.
